In this 1856 photograph taken by Reinhard Wernigk, the Abbott house can be seen in the left foreground.  Taken from what is now Hoban St., looking down Market St., the island's  first photograph  was taken to get a "fine view of the fort."  After spending the summer of 1856 on Mackinac Island, Mr. and Mrs. Wernigk perished when the steamer "Niagara" burned and sank enroute to Chicago.
